Lots going on...

I can't even begin to explain how busy we have been the last few weeks! I actually really enjoy getting out of the house and being the taxi mom. The girls are at the age where they can miss a nap a time or two and it isn't a big deal.

Here are some things we have been up to...

We started meeting with our homeschool co-op this month. We have been in this group for four years and I can't imagine homeschooling without being involved in one. They have encouragement me every step of the way! We meet once a week for six weeks each semester. They also offer field trips and this fall we are doing a lot of them. Here are the kids on the first day of co-op. Hannah looks like she is in pain... not sure what is going on there, but trust me, it was the best picture!

Isaac has been playing soccer since July. I don't have a lot of pictures, because I get too excited/nervous during the games and I can't stand looking behind the camera. This coming Saturday is his last game, it makes me sad! He has been playing since he was 3 years and we have grown to LOVE soccer!

John is playing flag football this fall. He is loving it! I am glad that we have found something that he really enjoys. He is adamant that he wants to play tackle next year. I am pretty sure my heart will not be able to handle that.

The boys are taking a weekly art class at a local private Christian High School and they have really learned a lot! I have no artistic ability so it is a good investment! I was really impressed when they walked out of class with these paintings.

The girls continue to take dance. They LOVE getting dressed up for class. I think that is their favorite part! They take dance from two teenager sisters that started their own dance studio in their home. They are amazing girls and hardly charge us anything! The money that they do bring in is helping them go to on a missions trip next summer.

Speaking of missions trips... I have some news! I am in the planning stages of going to Haiti next summer with visiting orphans. I AM SO EXCITED!! I will obviously keep you posted as I learn more!

I hope you all are having a great week!

10 things that make me happy

I got this idea from Courtney. If you haven't been to her blog yet, you really need to!

1. Diet Dr. Pepper. Caffeine. Carbonation. Pure yumminess!
2. The sunshine. I LOVE IT! It makes me so very happy!
3. Worship music. Even though I can't sign at all. I love signing to my Lord.
4. Walt Disney World. This maybe because we are leaving for Florida soon, but some of my happiest memories of childhood were from our trips to Disney World!
5. Birthdays. It really has nothing to do with the fact that today is my birthday. I just love celebrating life! I have fun planning what we are going to do to make that person feel special. The birthday celebrations at our house usually last a week.
6. My husband kissing me six times each morning before he goes to work. One for me and one for each of the kids.
7. When we are tucking the girls in at night they will say, "hugs kisses, hugs kisses!" Even if we had a hard day, this makes me smile. I am so happy they are home!
8. Hearing my boys play the piano. I love hearing their songs fill my house!
9. Being my children's teacher. It isn't always easy, but it makes me happy that I am able to stay at home with them and spend so much time with them before they grow up. It also rocks because I am learning so much that I either have forgotten or was never taught.
10. When one of my favorite author's comes out with a new book.

It is really hard to stop at 10, but there you go! Now let me ask. What makes you happy?

Crafts...

I am not a crafty person. I enjoy scrapbooking, but even those pages are on the lame side. I just don't have the brain for anything creative. That is a fact!

I do have a crafty kid though. Isaac LOVES crafts. Can't get enough of them. Would do them everyday if he could.

We never have craft type stuff around the house and one day a couple of weeks ago the guilt got to me. I do need to have more things around for him. He needs to get his creative juices flowing or whatever crafty people do.

We went to Joann Fabrics and he got to pick out a few things that he would like to do. He was in heaven! I let the other 2 pick out one thing, but it didn't mean as much. I think that John was done with his craft in 60 seconds.

facebook

The same night I started my blog, I signed up for facebook. facebook is a social network, like myspace. At first I thought I had made a huge mistake. There are so many young people on there and well... I am just not that young anymore.

Well, I have to admit that attitude changed quickly. I am in love with it! I have gotten back in touch with a lot of people. A cousin I hadn't talked to in almost 10 years, family members that were babies the last time I saw them (now they are DRIVING) and many classmates that I haven't talked to since high school and college.

When I was a freshman in college I had 2 roommates, S and L. They meant the world to me. I had a really hard time adjusting to life 1,100 miles away from home and they made it easier on me. After our freshman year S went home to Michigan to finish her degree. We only got together once our sophomore year. After that there were a few letters, but we quickly lost touch. I have thought about her often over the past 12 years and last week she found me on facebook. I think I screamed when I saw her name. To be reunited with such a dear friend gives me such joy. It has been great talking with her again and catching up. facebook makes it so easy to get in touch and keep in touch with some great people!

A Sweet Surprise

The other night I was up late getting things ready for our garage sale. Monte was with me for support. He was asleep on the couching supporting me, thats just his way of doing it. I love my husband! When I went upstairs to get ready for bed, this is what greeted me when I walked through the door.

How sweet is that? I love being a mom!

We have company...

I was mowing the lawn this morning and I noticed that in one of our trees (we have TWO) we have a nest with a robin in it. This is one of the many joys of spring, I was so excited!

After I was done mowing I got my camera and planned to capture the bird sitting in the nest. Well, she would have no part of it and flew off making some crazy noises at me. Obviously she still feels fat after laying the eggs... I completely understand her stress. I am sure her noises had NOTHING to do with the fact that I was disturbing her and her eggs. So I took a picture of this instead.

Isn't that just perfect?

An EARTHQUAKE in Indiana!

Well my dear friends I just experienced my first EARTHQUAKE. It was measured at a 5.4 5.2 magnitude. It happened at 5:37am this morning. I was laying on the couch and I heard the back door making an odd sound, I thought it was wind, it was vibrating the glass. Then the couch started to shake and then the whole house start vibrating and just making the oddest sound. I had no clue what was going on, but knew at that time it couldn't of been wind.

When it hit I was trying to get back to sleep after Monte left for work and this clearly woke me up. It really took me about 10 minutes to figure out what it was and I immediately turned on the news where they confirmed my thought.

The shaking lasted about 10 seconds. I think it probably lasted longer, but I didn't know what I was experiencing so I didn't know how to gage it.

It was wild and I was a little a lot scared, but I lived through unhurt and everyone is fine. The boys didn't even wake up and Monte didn't feel it while driving. I don't think we have any damage, but once the sun is up I will go outside and make sure.

Our Autism Story Part II

Part I of Our Autism Story

Josiah started developmental and speech therapy the first week of June 2006. First Steps is wonderful because they come to the home and step into the child’s environment and work with them that way. I just love First Steps and had such a positive experience with the program.

Josiah was 6 weeks away from turning 2 at the start of therapy, but speech wise he was on the save level as a 12 month old. So the speech therapist, Cindy Addie, had her work cut out for her. She started doing sign language with Josiah and using simple “contagious” words. He really caught on to the sign language. It was amazing to see him signing all different things. A few weeks into speech therapy, he was still not talking but he was signing like crazy! At this time Cindy told me that Josiah probably would need an occupational evaluation. Children who have sensory issues usually end up needing occupational therapy, so this was the next step!

On his 2nd birthday, July 19, he was evaluated for occupational therapy and he started with a therapist, Babbie Easter, the first week of August. The neat thing that happened with therapy was that speech and occupational came together for one hour a week to work with him. These women simply amazed me with everything they do.

I have to take a time out and give God praise. Keep in mind we just moved one hour away to the west side of Indianapolis. We really didn’t know why God lead us here, but we knew without a doubt this is where he wanted us. I believe that God went before us and paved a way for our family. We learned early on that therapists, especially speech and occupational were very hard to come by in central Indiana. If we still lived where we were Josiah wouldn’t have been able to have speech or occupational therapy. Not only did we get the therapist, but they are the best in the business and we had many people tell us just that. I am so thankful that God takes care of us even when we don’t realize it at the time.

There were many exercises that we did with Josiah on a daily basis. There was a lot of massaging, brush therapy (using a therapy brush to stimulate nerves) and many other occupational exercises. It was very time consuming, but we noticed a difference in him if we didn’t do them.

The one thing I did do was include the oldest two during these times. This is something that I didn't have to think to hard about. A special needs child is very time consuming, but I think it is very important to not make other children in the family feel left out. I didn't want Isaac and John in any way to resent Josiah because of something I could of advoided early on. They were still go young and didn't fully understand why Josiah was needing so much attention. It was during this time that I had to completely put any needs and wants that I had to the side. I used absolutely all of my energy to focus on my boys and getting Josiah the help that he needed. I researched Sensory Integration Disorder nonstop. Everything we did was based around Josiah’s sensory needs and we still were not leaving the house a lot. I tried to not do anything that could cause any of us a lot of stress. It was something that I avoided at all cost during this time.

Even though Josiah was getting 2 hours of therapy a week with 3 different therapists, his speech was still not increasing at the speed we thought it should. At the end of September I asked Babbie and Cindy what else I could be doing. As a mother I wanted to be doing everything that I was humanly capable of. I knew the window of opportunity would be fading the older he got, so I wanted to do as much as possible right then and there.

I am now a celebrity...

Y'all... the dream that I have never dreamed has come true (can it still be a dream then?)... I am now a local celebrity.

Last year my sister and I walked the Race For The Cure in Indianapolis. Our local NBC station is now running a commercial gearing up for the race this year and my dear friends... I AM IN THE COMMERCIAL!

If I would of known last year that I was going to be exposed for all of Indianapolis to see, I would of put on some makeup and done my hair. It is funny to see how much I have changed in one year. Last year I had over 11 inches of hair on my head and an added 30lbs on my body. It is encouraging to see myself FINALLY losing my "baby" weight! Having 3 BIG babies in 34 months is not nice on a body.

Now that is the WHOLE TRUTH, but I must add the rest... I am shown with about 3,000 other racers. It took many times of seeing the commercial to even realize I was in it. Since then Channel 13 has been on a lot, so my normally humble self (big laugh) could gloat about being on television.

I think this is the point where I get an agent and move to Hollywood. I will let you know of those details when we get them all worked out.

TOP SECRET...

It is sunny out today and going to be close to 70... it is going to be a good day. In honor of the warmer weather that I love, I thought I would pass along a little secret about saving money!

If your kids are anything like mine, they love Chuck E Cheese! They opened a store just down the road from us almost a year ago and we visit often. Most people go at night and on the weekends and it is always very crowded. My youngest falls apart because he doesn't do well with a lot of people, it makes the trip a stressful one. So here is the secret I want to share...

We get there as soon as they open, our opens at 9am... yes 9am. Usually when we go at this time we have the whole place to ourselves. It is perfect. Yes, I know we are more flexible because we are a homeschooling family, but we have also done this on Saturday morning. We don't have the place to ourselves, but it is still not crowded.

Also each day they test the games. They have an employee go around to each game and play it and when he wins tickets he just leaves them. We always ask if it is ok if we take the tickets he won and he is always more than happy to give them to 3 cute little boys! We usually walk away with over 100 tickets without playing one single game!

Chuck E Cheese can be pretty costly, but I found these coupons online and it is only $10 for 100 tokens; that is a savings of at least $10. It usually takes us 2 visits to use that many tokens. The coupons are good until the end of the year.

Time for me to get outside and enjoy this beautiful Indiana day!

Who needs sleep?

Apparently I am dealing with some insomnia issues as of recent and let me just say... it is not fun! A friend asked "so what do you do when you can't sleep?" The answer is lots of stuff, but my favorite is reading blogs. I am so new to the blogging world and had no clue how many "cool" people are out there. I have recently found a lot of Christian celebrities too... I am special I know!

Well I wanted to share a couple blog posts I ran across while my eyes and brain would not allow me to sleep on this very early Wednesday morning.

This one is an April Fool's joke and I seriously was wiping the tears from my eyes I was laughing so hard. I hope you enjoy it also.

This is Shaun Groves blog for today. It'll warm your heart to know what a great dad he is. I think he is pretty funny too!

These next ones I read each and every day. These ladies are wonderful!

Our Autism Story Part I

April is Autism Awareness month so I wanted to take this time to tell Josiah’s story and our battle with getting our precious little boy back from the brinks of Autism. I am sure it'll take at least a few posts so check back often.

We'll start at the beginning. As an infant it took a lot to get Josiah to smile, but he was such a good baby. I never had any complaints and didn’t think much about his lack of emotion until much later. I figured he was so good because I was so busy being the mom of three young boys that he had to be more compliant. I remember telling his pediatrician when he was about seven months old that I was concerned because he rocked a lot when he was in the sitting position. She told me not to worry; a lot of babies do this.

When Josiah was 8 months old he got tubes put in his ears, we were hoping that this would help him start talking/babbling more since he had some hearing loss. This operation didn’t change anything with our little boy’s vocabulary, but he did start hearing a lot better.

When he turned a year old, he stopped saying the few words he knew. He became a very difficult child. He would scream about everything. It was very stressful taking him anywhere because he would scream when I got him in the cart (or at least tried to get him in), but he would also scream when I would hold him. Nothing worked. We resorted to staying at home and if I needed to do anything I did it when Monte got home from work. I figured we had a strong willed child in the works.

This went on until he was 18 months old and had another baby well check up. I expressed that my concern now was that he is not talking. She again didn’t seem very concerned, but I was adamant that I thought something was wrong. She told me that she would schedule an evaluation with First Steps. First Steps is a program in Indiana which provides early intervention services to children birth to three years of age, who have developmental delays or are developmentally at risk.

We moved to the west side of Indianapolis April 15 of 2006 and Josiah had his evaluation on May 17, he was 2 days shy of being 22 months. A speech therapist and developmental therapist took an hour to evaluate him in many different areas. I knew without a doubt that he was behind in speech, but honestly I didn’t feel he was delayed in any other area. I am the type of person who likes information. I don’t like things to be hidden from me so I was asking lots of questions. They were very good and answered my questions. They told me that Josiah was behind in many different areas developmentally and they gave me a suggestion of a book to read. Needless to say I was in shock. I had so many more things I wanted to ask them, but at that moment I was just surviving and no longer functioning. I don’t remember how long I cried, but I do remember it was a while. This was a very sad day in my life.

Soon there after I went to the bookstore and got the book that they suggested “The Out of Sync Child.” This was a book about Sensory Integration Disorder. I had never heard of anything like this, so I had a lot to learn. The book fascinated me because it was like they came into our house and wrote a book about Josiah. I shed many tears over this book as I slowly realized I had a child with special needs.

CORRECTION...

Josiah now has the high fever too.

One of the verses from church today... love it!
Romans 12:12 "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer."

It's Baaack...

Well... it is official... two of my boys are sick again.

John has been complaining that his neck hurts for two days now. I just brushed it off as a stiff neck, no big deal. Well he came into my room about 1 hour ago with a high fever. It then dawned on me that he really didn't have a stiff neck but his throat has been hurting. There is a flu going around with a high fever and a severe sore throat, so I am guessing that is the matter.

Isaac has a cough that keeps getting worse. I am still hoping that his is just allergies, but he'll need to start breathing treatments again in the morning.

I hope and pray this is all short lived.

Warm weather where are you?

The First Day Of Forever

Yesterday at 4pm, my grandmother left this earth to be with her Lord and Savior. Today is her first full day of eternity. Can you even imagine how wonderful her day is? I don’t think our human minds can truly grasp what heaven is truly like and I know my grandmother is taking it all in right now.

She was 83 when she died. She is the first one of family members, that I remember, that lived a long life. I thought because of that, losing her wouldn’t be as hard. Well, let me say that it does not matter how long a persons life is, a loss is always full of hurt and devastation. As you know from my previous post, she meant the world to me and I am going to miss her like crazy. She was a wonderful grandmother!

The grieving process has just started for our family and there are a lot of tears to come. She didn’t want to have a funeral; she hated being the center of attention. We are going to respect her wishes and only have a graveside service sometime this spring (when Maine gets rid of over 2 feet of snow). My parents were here in Indiana when she passed, so they got an early morning flight home today. They are going to have a lot to do in the coming days. My grandfather is still alive but he is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s so he is not able to help in any of the arrangements.

Last night we sat the boys down to tell them the news. Of course I wasn’t able to do it without breaking down. John, my 5 year old, says “Mommy, I am glad (that she is in heaven) because now she has a new body.” Praise Be To GOD, he is so right! At that moment my 5 year old put everything in perspective for me.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things that are not seen are eternal."

My husband... God love him!

My husband is not a fun person to go out to dinner with. It seems that I forget this every time we make plans to eat out and once we step foot in the door I feel like slamming my head against the wall at how stupid I am. His father has been in the restaurant industry all of his life, so he knows how things should run inside a dinning facility. Monte would work with his father during the summers that he spent with him and once he was old enough he became a server. He did this all the way through college and he made good money!

So needless to say Monte doesn’t relax when we are eating out. He TIMES everything. It is insane. I personally love going out to eat and I love to sit, relax, enjoy the atmosphere and company, but this is not attainable when I am sitting across from crazy man.

Last week, I had the bright idea I wanted to go to a restaurant, for our birthdays, that we had never been to before. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID!!! The hubby agreed, so we loaded the kids up and off we went. The service was horrible, I mean horrible. The food wasn’t much better. A cold cheeseburger never goes down well. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the manager was making her rounds, I prayed to God that she would skip our table. Did she? OF COURSE NOT! She comes and asks how the meal was and Monte told her the truth. He was not rude but honest. He and I ended up getting our meals for free. He didn’t ask for his nor did we expect it and we let her know that, but she wanted to do it since it was our first time. The whole time I thought about camping out under the table out of sheer embarrassment.

I will say in my husband’s defense that if we do have a great experience then he will purposefully get the attention of the manager and let them know or go home and write to the corporate office. He is fair all the way around, but that doesn’t make me any less embarrassed and it doesn’t make him any less stressful to eat with.

I have learned my lesson, again. I will not bring up the idea of visiting a restaurant anytime soon. So may I suggest a girls night, all in favor let me know!

Some days are hard

I have been in Indiana for over twelve years now and some days I still ache for home. This is one of them. I just got word today that my grandmother is in the hospital. It is so hard to be 18 hours away and digest this information knowing I can’t be there. I know there is nothing I can do, but I just want to be there for my family and myself.

My grandmother has always been a big part of my life. My maiden name is Hubbard and I lived on Hubbard Ave., as did some of my family including my grandparents. When I was young I spent almost every afternoon at my grandmother’s. I enjoyed her company. It was my home away from home.

She is 83 now and has had some health issues for a few years now. She has to have someone at her house 14 hours a day during the day. My parents are there a lot taking care of her and my grandfather. I wish I could be there to help. I want to be there for support. I wish I could hug her and tell her how much she means to me. I would love to tell her that I cherish the fact she was such a big part of my life! Not a lot of kids get to have their grandparents live across the street.

Even though 1,100 miles separates us, I will be on my knees praying for my family back home. That is the most important thing I can do right now.

I have to smile looking at this picture because she has always hated getting her picture taken. So she would be pretty upset to know it was on my blog for everyone to see. This was taken in July 2007.

My weekend project

Monte bought me a stainless steel side-by-side water and ice in the door refrigerator in October last year. It is the first “nice” fridge I have ever had, and it is a scratch and dent. With three boys we didn’t want to get something too nice and have me crying in the fetal position if the boys got a scratch on it. We didn’t want to give them that temptation or set me up for an inevitable break down. Since then I have not let the boys put their magnetic letters or games on the fridge. I enjoy having a fridge with nothing on it. Can you tell I really like my fridge?

It got me thinking, what I could do so the boys could use their letters and magnetic games that they have. Well, did you know they have magnetic paint? I have wanted to do this since we got the fridge, but I just haven’t had the motivation or time. Well, this month my parents and Monte’s mom and step-dad are coming to visit and for me that is motivation!

So last Friday and Saturday I painted a half wall in the boys’ playroom with the magnetic paint. I think it came out really well and other than one of the cats getting curious and sticking her paw in the BLACK pant and then walking all over the upstairs, it was a smooth process.

It's the Birthday Season

We have many birthdays within a three weeks span. My sister and grandfather’s was last week. Monte, my dad and mine are this week. My mom’s is the week after that.

Monte’s is the first one in March! He does not get too excited about his birthday and never really wants to do anything. I did throw him a surprise party when he turned 30, but have done nothing since then and that was a while ago now. :-) The only idea the boys can come up with is going to Chuck E Cheese. They can’t comprehend that someone wouldn’t want to go there on their birthday! So we’ll do something small again this year, probably go out to eat and celebrate our birthdays together. I have started thinking already for next year and I would love to do something special for him. Good thing I have 365 days to think about it! Happy Birthday Hon, I love you. I am so thankful that God has given you to me. I can't think of anyone I would rather grow old with!
