Last summer Isaac and John were 6 and 5. I took off their training wheels and told them they needed to learn how to ride a bike because I wasn't going to put the training wheels back on. Ever. I had never heard of a 6 year old not riding on two wheels. Little did I know that learning to ride a bike was a lot like potty training. They are ready when they are ready and not a day before. About a month ago they both decided it was time to start riding and it only took them two days and they got it. I couldn't believe it.
A couple of weeks ago a friend send me a link to a youtube video about teaching your kids how to ride a bike. Isaac and John were already riding, but I thought it was worth a shot with Josiah. You take off their training wheels and pedals. They use their feet to go forward. Doing this helps them focus solely on balance. Josiah did this for a week (the video claims it only takes 1/2 hour)and after a week I put his pedals back on. He took off and has been riding ever since. He just loves the fact he can ride with his brothers. I am sure that was motivation for him. He is fiercely independent and doesn't like to be left behind.

What a great tip! I'll have to try that next time.
I took my daughter's padals off last in an attempt to get her to ride. It didn't work...and she was 6! Well, she's seven now and a month ago she finally got it. I've never seen a 7 yr old who can't ride a two-wheeler. She was embarrassed to let people see her practice. So, since she's homeschooled, she did it while the other kids were in school. Thank God, I was getting embarrassed. :)
You just beat me to this post! This evening, Asher tried again and it worked! It took longer than 30 minutes, but worked like a charm. So happy you can now take family bike rides ;)
