Compassion International

I got an email from Compassion International informing me that this month is Compassion blogging month, who knew? They want us to blog about our Compassion experience.

We have been sponsors to a girl from Uganda for 7 years now. She is an amazing little girl, well not so little anymore, she is now 16! We also have had two boys in Indonesia. We had our first boy for 4 years. About 18 months ago we got a letter from him saying that because he was moving, he would no longer be close to a Compassion project, so he could no longer be our sponsor child. Needless to say I was devastated. You wouldn't think a child half the world away could impact you, but these children are amazing and you learn so much about God's love through them. I often think people get into Compassion thinking they are going to change a child's life and maybe in the beginning that was my mindset too, but God uses experiences like this to change you. They gave us another boy from the same area shortly after and we have had him for 18 months.

When my boys have a birthday, like most kids, they get a party and presents. It seems like it is a week affair. In other countries it is not like that at all. We always send the Compassion children money for their birthdays and they don't buy toys or fun things. They don't even celebrate their birthdays. Each year they tell us they have gotten a chicken or goat for the family and maybe some clothes. Something that really touched me was last year our girl gave the remaining of her money to her siblings. Do my kids willingly do that, no? This is something that blows me away each year, their genuine selflessness.

I am so thankful that we are able to sponsor two amazing children through Compassion. It is a wonderful ministry and we are thankful for the work that Compassion does for these children. My dream is to be able to travel to Uganda to meet our girl someday! I could go on forever about this ministry, but I will end here!
