I don't think a lot of people know how to handle large families. I never gave it much thought until, of course, I had a large family. The comments I get are interesting. At first they used to drive me batty, but I have learned that most people don't have a clue what to say, especially with our family being multicultural. I don't mind the attention, but there are times that I would love to go to Target without the comments and stares.
Here are some of the comments...
Are they all yours?
Do you run a daycare?
Girl, you must be crazy!
You have your own basketball team.
You are one brave woman.
You need your head examined. (I truly have gotten this a couple of times)
and the most common one...
You have your hands full! I hear this one at least once every time we are out. I just polietly smile and say, "We are very blessed.".
We recently were out enjoying Indianapolis and we ran into two families that we know. They each have three children. This is basically how the conversation went with each of them.
Me: Hi!
Them: Hi, are you here alone?
Me: Yes
Them: 1,2,3,4,5... with all five kids?
Me: Yes
Them: I don't know how you do it.
Me: (smiling)Well, if I didn't I would never leave the house.
Them: You are very brave.
Me: I believe you learn to handle what you have.
I walked away from both of those encounters wondering... do people really think I stay at home just because I have five kids? I ONLY have five kids! I know so many people who have 7,8,9,10 kids and I am pretty sure they don't sit at home either!

Do people not get that the more the better? I came from a big family and the more children around the more they play with each other and are happy.
I hear those same comments all the time. It makes me sad that the majority attitude is that we are crazy. One day, an old couple stared at me in line and asked if they were all my kids. When I said they were, they smiled and told me that that was such a blessing for me. Yay! I agreed. There is lots of wisdom from our older generations.
Hear it - constantly.....so sad that soooo many miss the real point which should be- wow- you have sooo many BLESSINGS!!!!!!
I have had some that do say - wow you are Blessed- to that I definitely say- Thank you I am :)
You crack me up! Don't they know why we have so many kids? So they can watch eachother:) This makes moms job so easy.
Seriously, it's not until recently since the kids have gotten a little older that we are getting more positive comments. Most of the time it is an older person being blessed by watching a big family in action or a young mom with several kids seeing hope for her future. God is and will use your family's witness.
I got this ALL the time and that was way before Finny came home, now they really don't know what to make of us! It use to frustrate me when I would be out with the triplets and people would say to me..."I'm glad they are yours and not mine"...huh really, I just said "Me too" :)
