Why, yes I did marry a redneck!

My husband has left us for one week, to go hunting. He has only been gone for 2 days now and I miss him like crazy. I do pray that he doesn't shoot anything big though. My walls don't need any more dead deer on them!

I love Monte, even though he is a redneck. So in honor of him I am going to post one of my first posts.

It has been a long week, so I thought I would share a story that will always make Monte and I laugh!

I truly believe the Lord has a great sense of humor and our life is a perfect example of that!

I think most people have a list of things they want in a spouse. These were the top 3 on my list when I was in my early 20s:
1. He HAS to be a Christian
2. He has to exercise or be into fitness
3. He can't be into or having anything to do with hunting

I did in fact marry a Christian!

When I met Monte (October 3, 1999) he would never claim that he worked out, but once spring arrived he started running and I was SO excited. I had dreams of going to the gym with my man and staying healthy together. He didn't share with me until later that the ONLY reason he was running was because of our wedding was quickly approaching in June. He hasn't exercise one day since our wedding, but he is eating better these days.

I do not like hunting and I hate guns with a passion. The thing I hate even more are dead animals on walls. Once again when I met Monte he hadn't hunted in a couple of years, so I thought he had "outgrown" it. There were no animals on the wall. The only gun I saw was a hand gun for protection, I could handle that.

Guess what? Monte didn't outgrow hunting and has many guns. He goes hunting every year. In 2005 Monte shot a big deer and had it stuffed. Yes people I have a deer head in my living room. I did kick and scream for a while, but I love my husband and this is his house too. I agreed that he could put up 1 deer and 1 deer only! Fast forward to the present... we now have three deer heads in our house.

Truly God is so good. He knows how hard headed I am and if I would of known all of this over 8 years ago, there wouldn't of been a second date. I wouldn't have my life any other way. Monte is a wonderful husband and father. He is one of the hardest working men I have ever known. I am proud of my man! I am so blessed.

So if you are planning a visit to the Alexander household brace yourself for the deer on the wall. I will forget to warn you that they are there, because I am used to them now. I never thought I would hear myself say that! :)

I'm thinking coat rack?

Wow, those are deer heads. I mean I heard you say it but didn't fully grasp it until I saw the picture. He does look proud, though.

I'm glad that you've chosen to love him the way he needs to be loved- marriage is so much better that way.

I need to bring Joseph over to see those. He would be impressed!

I received your email today and I have to say that I have enjoyed your posting. I really enjoyed reading this one. I had to bring Mike in to read it to. We got a good laugh out of it. I really miss you and the family. Love you all and God Bless you all. Kaytee

Let me just say that I think you are a saint of a wife to allow 3 deer heads on the walls.

I agree they would make nice coat racks or even great places to hang Christmas stockings!!!

That is so funny. Isn't it wierd how you always do things that you say you will never do?

I am thinking you could use them for a ring toss game. You know when the kids get bored, just give them some plastic pool rings and tell them to toss away :)

Oooooh.....Mike would love the motif in our house! He's a huge hunter too. His dad has 100 acres in upstate New York where Mike grew up and every November they spend a couple of weeks hunting. I am NOT into hunting, so he has to bring all the venison home pre-cut and packages. Yuck! Last year he finally won the moose lottery and shot a huge bull in Northern Maine.

My qualities in a husband were:
1. Not a Christian--God sent me one of THE MOST committed Christians.

2. He CAN'T be a church-goer (we're there 3 times a week now!)

3. He needs to be committed to adoption.

So, I got one out of three and wouldn't change it for the world. He's absolutely the most wonderful husband God could have ever planned for me. God completely turned my life around and I couldn't be happier!

By the way, Monte could use the heads for gun-racks! Just kidding.

OH my word!!! I can't believe all we seem to have in common! As of two days ago, we were the same age, we both have three boys (ours are 7, 5, and 3) and are adopting from Ethiopia (are you requesting an infant girl?), and we both have husband that pride themselves in being rednecks. Does yours wear flip flops and t-shirts year round, too? Oh, and we both love our men so much! I had to laugh looking at your family picture. Your outfit looks so nice, complete with jewelry...and hubby is in a t-shirt (not that he doesn't look nice, too :) ) It just so reminds me of us. They do such a good job balancing, don't they? I don't know how balanced I'd be without him!

So, if you're in Indy, we only live about 3 hours away from each other--we're in the South Bend area. Maybe someday we can get our wonderful crazy families together!

Blessings,
Danielle

P.S. And congrats on getting your dossier off! That's so exciting! I remember following that precious package like it was yesterday. What agency are you adopting with?

p.s. We made a compromise on the deer head placement: it's in the office. I figure you can't see it from the kitchen (where I seem to be A LOT of the time!) and you can't see it when you walk in the front door, but he can show it proudly to anyone he wants, just not when they first walk into our home :)
